Privacy
The short version
Tidings not only keeps very little about you, it actively wants to know as little as possible about you. Only as much as it's necessary to send the custom newsletters you create to whatever device you want to receive them. That's literally it. We never sell data, never share it for ads, and we don't have any trackers or tracking cookies anywhere.
Last updated 18 October 2026.
What we keep
The things every account needs:
- Your email address. This is how you sign in, and it's where every edition of your custom publication (newsletter) is sent. We don't have the concept of passwords.
- Your nickname. This is only used to greet you in the app and in emails.
- Your timezone and temperature unit. Especially useful if you're sending yourself weather information. The timezone is necessary so we know when to send a publication.
- Your publications. This is the application data. This includes the name you set, the sources you use, the sending schedule and frequency.
- Three small cookies. One keeps you signed in after you login for 60 days. The second guards against forgery and the third carries a note like "Saved" to the next page. Most importantly, none track you.
There are also things you can add, skip, or remove any time in Settings:
- A Kindle address. This is needed when sending editions to a Kindle.
- An Instapaper connection. If you want to read your editions using Instapaper then this is required. Reading your editions on a Kobo device requires Instapaper as well. We keep your Instapaper username and a key Instapaper gives us to identify you on their service.
- A Google Calendar connection. This is needed if you're including calendar events in your editions. We keep a key that Google gives us, your Google account and your calendar names. When we generate an edition, we read calendar events then, but don't store them separately. Calendar events only live in that edition.
- Your Bluesky or Mastodon handle. Using this it's possible to see who you follow on there, and then we can more easily suggest accounts and their posts that you want included when building a publication. This is public information, and we only store it to make the service faster. We never need a password.
If at some point you joined the waitlist on this site before launch, we only keep that email to let you know when Tidings opens. It's deleted after a single email to you.
What we don't
No passwords! This is by design. Tidings is a service where you build custom newsletters called publications. We center around email, so you also sign in with a link we email you. No credit card numbers. Absolutely no analytics profiles, and no reading habits are ever sold or shared. Like every website, our servers will see your IP address when logging in and using the service. We only use this information to stop abuse such as hammering our service with an inordinate amount of fake requests.
Who helps
A few companies handle data on our behalf, but only to do the job named below. Note that when your data leaves the EU, it's covered by the EU's standard data-protection contracts.
- DigitalOcean hosts Tidings and its database, in Frankfurt, Germany.
- Cloudflare helps a great deal with hosting as well, especially static content. It's also quite helpful at fending off attacks.
- Postmark sends our email. This includes sign-in links and all editions.
Paddle acts as our merchant. It handles local taxes, and it looks after your card and billing details under its own privacy policy. We'll see your email and the plan you choose, but never your full card number.
Your say
It's your data, so you're in charge:
- Disconnect Instapaper, Google Calendar, Bluesky, Kindle, or any other connection at any time in Settings.
- Change your email address in Settings.
- Delete your account in Settings too. Everything in your account is deleted at the same time. Backups persist for 7 days, and email logs for 45 days.
- Ask at any point of time for a copy of what we keep by writing to support@tidings.email. We'll answer within a month for data requests, and usually much faster.
- Complain to your local data protection authority if you think we've got something wrong, though we'd love the chance to fix it first.
Changes
As a user of our service, you will receive an email for any large or meaningful changes to the privacy policy.
